2008 Annual College of Pharmacy Conference

Idaho State University is pleased to offer our annual continuing pharmacy education (CPE) program, designed to update your therapeutic knowledge base and rejuvenate your pharmacy practice skills. This one day seminar will provide you with current information and a fresh perspective on a variety of topics. It includes 7 hours of live ACPE approved continuing education, one hour of which will be Idaho law.

This program will explain recent changes to Idaho Statute and Code, including those passed in the 2007 legislative session and thus currently effective and those passed in the 2008 legislative session, soon to be effective. Issues with current statutes and code will also be discussed.

  • Understand 2007 and 2008 changes to Idaho State Statute and Code
  • Identify current issues with existing Idaho Statute and Code
  • Review cases of controlled substance diversion and identify practices that may prevent future incidents

Use and Detection of Ergogenic Aids in High School Athletes
Kevin W. Cleveland, PharmD, ANP

This discussion will inform pharmacists about the growing concern of ergogenic aid use in the adolescent population. The talk will cover the most common substances used by high school students and briefly discuss the process of detecting their use by drug tests.

  • State the prevalence, mechanisms of action and side effects of ergogenic aids in adolescent athletes
  • Differentiate between screening and confirmatory drug testing in athletics
  • Counsel patients effectively regarding performance enhancing agents

Why is Pharmacy Such a Pain in the Neck?
Kristine Mullen

To help pharmacists recognize and avoid the hazards that can contribute to ergonomic-related illnesses (ERI’s), we will explore potential modifications to existing routines and settings to minimize exposures to ergonomic risk factors. The benefits and limitations of medical devices in the mitigation of ERI’s will also be discussed. The presenter will attempt to arm pharmacists with enough information to advise their patients in the at-home care of such illnesses.

  • Recognize the risks for developing Ergonomic-Related Illnesses (ERI’s) within the retail pharmacy setting and understand the progression of many ERI’s
  • Identify and implement specific practices to minimize personal and personnel exposure to ERI risks
  • Apply knowledge about ERI’s and physiology to merchandising decisions for retail pharmacies

The Idaho Drug Utilization Review Program: Past, Present, and Future
Christopher T. Owens, PharmD, BCPS

This presentation will provide background information on the Drug Utilization Review (DUR) Program in Idaho, highlight key DUR program differences between Idaho and other states, review selected intervention and outcome study findings, and encourage practicing pharmacists to participate in Idaho DUR activities.

  • Become familiar with the Idaho Drug Utilization Review (DUR) Program, and compare its activities with those of other states’ programs
  • Understand the process by which claims data are collected and analyzed and how this information is used to improve patient care and decrease Idaho Medicaid costs
  • Evaluate the educational mission of the DUR program for Idaho healthcare professionals, cite examples of intervention studies, and find out how to become an active participant in DUR activities

Diabetes Management Update: What in the World is the Incretin Effect?
Roger Hefflinger, PharmD

Informs participating pharmacists about recent advances in the management of type 2 diabetes. The presenter will review innovations in insulin preparations and delivery systems.

  • Describe the trends in the United States that predispose patients to diabetes
  • List the reversible risk factors and create strategies for patients to reverse these risk factors
  • Define the incretin effect and describe how new agents interact with the incretins

Crucial Conversations
Kerry Casperson, PhD

Offers techniques for communicating effectively in difficult and important situations to achieve positive results.

  • Recognize what makes a conversation crucial and assess your communication style under stress
  • Identify the process to improve dialogue and achieve shared meaning
  • Describe the signs of violence in workplace conversation and understand the tools needed to address the violation and reengage for success.

CE Credit

Seven (7) hours of ACPE credit (including 1 hour of law) will be awarded to those who attend the live program, complete a program evaluation and post test. Certificates will be mailed to you 4-6 weeks from the program date.

Cancellation

The University reserves the right to cancel a course offering due to insufficient enrollment, natural disaster, or other justifiable reasons. Registration fees will be refunded in full. However, the University is not responsible for any cancellation fees assessed by airlines, travel agencies, etc.
