THE MEDICAL
CENTER
ADULT MEDICINE PHARMACY PRACTICE RESIDENCY
This is a one-year, postgraduate, non-degree training program
designed for individuals who desire extensive involvement in providing
comprehensive clinical pharmacy services and management of institutional
drug distribution to adult medicine patients. Well-qualified
family medicine, pediatric, psychiatric, geriatric, and ambulatory
care pharmacy faculty also contribute to the training of the resident.
The resident will be appointed to the faculty as a lecturer at the
Idaho State University College of Pharmacy.
CLINICAL TRAINING SITES
The Inpatient Adult Medicine Service at the Boise
VA includes an eight-bed ICU, a cardiac care stepdown unit, a general medical/surgical
unit, and a geriatric rehabilitation unit. The service is staffed by five teams
of adult medicine and family practice residents and accompanying attending physicians.
Additional medical specialty staff include Infectious Diseases, Pulmonology,
Critical Care, and Geriatrics. Inpatient pharmacy services include: decentralized
distribution and pharmacy staff, patient education, monitoring of inpatients
for toxic and therapeutic effects, general drug information and formulary compliance.
The adult medicine resident would be actively integrated as a team member into
each of the five teams on a rotating basis. The Boise VAMC environment provides
a variety of opportunities for multidisciplinary collaboration and health care
provider education.
In addition, the resident would be expected to gain
additional experimental training at St Alphonsus Regional Medical Center. St.
Alphonsus serves as a level-two trauma center and as a regional referral center
for critical care, cardiac, pediatric, and general medicine patients. St. Alphonsus’
pharmacy provides decentralized distribution and clinical pharmacy services.
