RURAL AMBULATORY PRIMARY CARE PHARMACY RESIDENCY

This is a one-year, postgraduate, non-degree training program designed for individuals who desire extensive involvement in a variety of ambulatory primary care pharmacy practice environments.  This training program is designed to allow the resident to practice pharmaceutical care with other clinical pharmacists and Family Medicine Physicians in multiple practice sites.  In addition, the resident will be responsible for educational program development for physicians, pharmacists, pharmacy students, and other allied health professionals.  The resident will be appointed to the faculty as a lecturer for Idaho State University College of Pharmacy.

CLINICAL TRAINING SITES:

FAMILY PRACTICE MEDICAL CENTER

The Family Practice Medical Center of Idaho Inc. (FPMC) is an accredited Family Practice Residency training program by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.  The primary goal of FPMC is to train primary care physicians in the specialty discipline of Family Medicine.  The program is presently an 8/8/8 program with majority of our graduate physicians remaining in the Pacific Northwest.  In addition to residency training, FPMC has an academic affiliation with the University of Washington and accepts medical students from U of W during their 3rd year, and students from around the country during their 4th year.  FPMC receives additional funding from two major local hospitals in which the residents provide inpatient medicine, obstetrical, and pediatric services.  FPMC ambulatory clinic provides Monday-Friday patient care and the clinic presently averages 24,000 visitations each year.  The mix of clientele ranges from obstetrical, pediatric, adolescence, adult medicine, to geriatric patients.

CRITICAL CARE SYSTEMS

Critical Care Systems (CCS) is a regional provider of home health care for the citizens of Southwestern Idaho, Eastern Oregon, and Northern Utah.  The goal of CCS is to allow the patient versatility and flexibility in their home infusion medication regimens.  CCS has 2 full-time, and 5 per-diem pharmacists, 2 full-time and 2 per diem home health nurses, 2 full-time pharmacy technicians and the appropriate number of office support personnel.

TERRY REILLY HEALTH SERVICES

Terry Reilly Health Services is a primary care clinic, which is located 18 miles west of Boise in the town of Nampa, Idaho.  Terry Reilly acts to provide primary care to underserved individuals of Southwestern Idaho.  Patient visits are equally divided among obstetrical, pediatric, adolescence, adult medicine, and geriatrics.  Total yearly visitations number approximately 22,000.  In addition, pharmacy residents will travel to, and provide care in satellite clinics that are located in a number of rural under-served communities.

CALDWELL CLINICS

Caldwell Clinics is a primary care clinic, which is located 20 miles west of Boise in the town of Caldwell, Idaho.  Patient visits are equally divided among obstetrical, pediatric, adolescence, adult medicine, and geriatrics.  Caldwell Clinic houses an in-house pharmacy and provides pharmaceutical care services to 14 Family Practice Physicians and six Internal Medicine Physicians.  The residents maintain an Asthma Education Clinic.

CURRICULUM

The residency program is designed to train pharmacy practitioners in all major aspects of pharmaceutical care in a number of practice environments.  The Rural Ambulatory Primary Care Residency is designed to place residents into a rotational setting of introduction (i.e., 1-2 months in a row at each training site), and then provide a longitudinal exposure during the second half of the year (i.e., 1-2 days at each site).  The intent of this structure is to allow the resident an initial site exposure allowing orientation and project, development time, followed by a continuation phase.  A minimum of 2,000 hours over a one-year period is required for successful completion of the program.  During the 2,000 clock hours of experience, the instruction program is designed to provide the resident with, but not limited to:

  • Ambulatory Pharmaceutical Care Services
  • Home Infusion Therapy and Management
  • Inpatient/Outpatient Drug Distribution and Control
  • Pediatric Medicine
  • Geriatrics Medicine
  • Family Practice Medicine
  • Clinical Pharmacy Rounds/Inservice
  • Creative Work/Research
  • Physician/Allied Health/Pharmacist Education
  • Patient Education, Drug Use Education
  • Adverse Drug Reaction Reporting
  • Preceptor Pharm.D. Students

The resident is expected to share in the teaching of undergraduate pharmacy and medical students.  Furthermore, the resident is expected to contribute to the professional literature by assisting and engaging in scholarly work.

The program conforms to the most current learning objectives for residency training in Primary Care Pharmacy Practice published by the American Society of Hospital Pharmacists.

QUALIFICATIONS OF THE APPLICANT

The applicant must be a graduate of a school of pharmacy accredited by the American Council on Pharmaceutical Education, be a U.S. citizen, possess the Doctor of Pharmacy degree, and be licensed to [practice pharmacy in one of the States, territories of the United States, or District of Columbia.  The applicant must demonstrate an interest in pharmacy by active membership in the American Society of Hospital Pharmacists.  The applicant must demonstrate leadership abilities, professional competence communication skills, professional development, scholastic achievement, dependability, and ability to work with others.  These qualities will be judged through personal interviews, interviews with peers, pharmacy school transcripts, and letters of recommendation from instructors, supervisors, and others acquainted with the applicant in conjunction with the application.

Selection of the applicant will be made by the Resident Selection Committee and the Idaho State University College of Pharmacy in cooperation with the Chief, Pharmacy Service.

BOISE

Boise, the “City of Trees”, is the State’s capitol and largest metropolitan area in Idaho.  Approximately 400,000 people live in the Boise metro area.  The areas largest employers include companies that are leaders in their industries: Albertson’s Inc.; Boise Cascade Corp; Hewlett-Packard Co.; Micron Technology; Morrison-Knudsen Co., Inc; JF Simplot Co.; TJ International and Zilog.  The entire state of Idaho is known worldwide for its majestic mountain ranges, towering over streams and rivers, forests, mountain lakes, and high desert plains.  Idaho diversity affords each resident quality outdoor recreational experiences.  Boise itself is transected by the Boise River and a greenbelt walking/biking path throughout the city.  Idaho State University College of Pharmacy is located in Pocatello, four hours east of Boise.  Six full-time ISU faculty are based in Boise.
