Program Description for PGY1 with Focus in Geriatrics or Primary Care

Boise Veterans Affairs Medical Center and Idaho State University College of Pharmacy offer postgraduate year one (PGY1) ASHP-accredited, non-degree granting residency programs.  Under new ASHP standards, our training programs are designed to:

  • manage and improve the medication process
  • provide evidence-based, patient-centered medication therapy management with the interdisciplinary team
  • utilize medical informatics
  • exercise leadership and practice management skills
  • demonstrate project management skills
  • provide expertise in medication utilization and practice related education/training
  • develop skills necessary to become an effective didactic and clinical educator, skilled clinician, and scholar  

 

Additionally, residents are required to:

  • conduct pharmacy practice research to present at the Western States Conference for Pharmacy Residents, Fellows and Preceptors
  • exercise added leadership and practice management skills
  • demonstrate knowledge and skills particular to practice in geriatrics or primary care
  • contribute to formulary decisions
  • provide drug information to health care professionals and/or the public
  • demonstrate additional competencies that contribute to working successfully in the health care environment

Clinical Training Site  
The clinical training site for this residency program is the Boise Veterans Affairs Medical Center.  This site is the primary location for a model teaching site where well-qualified pharmacists will contribute to the training of residents in the areas of family medicine, infectious disease, psychiatry, geriatrics, internal medicine and pediatrics.  The goals of each resident are customized to account for their strengths, weaknesses and personal interests to help ensure their training is optimal.  Resident will be appointed to the Idaho State University College of Pharmacy faculty as a lecturer. 

Boise
Boise, the “City of Trees” is the capital and largest metropolitan area in Idaho.  Approximately 400,000 people live in the Treasure Valley.  The area’s largest employers are Super Value, Hewlett Packard, Micron Technology, i Anywhere, Washington Corp., and JR Simplot Co.  The state of Idaho is known worldwide for its majestic mountain ranges towering over streams and rivers, forests, mountain lakes and outdoor recreational experiences.  Boise is transected by the Boise River and a greenbelt walking/biking path throughout the city.  Idaho State University College of Pharmacy is located in Pocatello, four hours east of Boise. An off-site campus is located in Boise where third-year students attend distant-learning classes and fourth year students are given advanced pharmacy practice experiences. Eight ISU faculty are based in the Treasure Valley. 

Curriculum
A minimum of 2,000 clock hours over a 12-month period is required for successful completion of the program.  During this time residents are provided with orientation, instruction and experience in, but not limited to:

  • geriatrics
  • pediatrics
  • psychiatric/mental health
  • primary care
  • internal medicine
  • teaching 3rd professional year student through lecture and case study presentations
  • precepting 4th professional year students in advanced pharmacy practice experience (APPE)

 

Qualification of the Applicant
The applicant must be a graduate of a school of pharmacy accredited by the American Council on Pharmaceutical Education, be a U.S. citizen, possess the Doctor of Pharmacy degree, and be licensed to practice in one of the States, territories of the United States, or District of Columbia.  The applicant must demonstrate leadership abilities, professional competence, communication skills, professional development, scholastic achievement, dependability, and ability to work with others.  These qualities will be judged through personal interviews, interviews with peers, pharmacy school transcripts and letters of recommendation from instructors, supervisors, and others acquainted with the applicant in conjunction with the application.

Selection of the applicant will be made by the Residency Selection Committee and the Idaho State University College of Pharmacy in cooperation with the Chief of Pharmacy Service at Boise VAMC.

Interested applicants must participate in the ASHP Resident Matching Program. Applicants must also apply to each program independently of the Match. Send a letter describing your professional goals, current curriculum vitae, Optional Form OF612 and VA for 10-2850c completed with signature, a copy of transcripts of all college work, and 3 letter of reference by the same deadline date as the ASHP Resident Matching Program to:
