This page is designed as an informative resource for those who
are interested in the details of the College of Pharmacy and ISU's
network topology and services. If you want general information,
you may wish to look at our general technology
page, or the networking FAQ.
All information is current as of January, 2002.
Network Topology
ISU's internet connections number 3 at the moment
In addition, we have a leased line which connects the Pocatello
campus to the Idaho Falls campus.
Leonard Hall (College of Pharmacy) is connected to the gigabit
lower-campus wide-area network via a 100mbs (soon to be gigabit)
link. All desktop computers have a 10mbs switched ethernet connection
and all servers have a 100mbs switched ethernet connection to
our building switches (which are connected via gigabit ethernet).
The entire network is cat 5e certified and is capable of running
gigabit ethernet when the switches are updated.
Wireless Access
Most of the lower campus is blanketed by an 802.11b wireless
network, capable of speeds up to 11mbs on the 2.4ghz broad-band
spectrum. Leonard Hall has three access points, capable of handling
traffic throughout the building and the surrounding lawn areas.
Access is encryped with 128-bit WEP public keys, see the wireless
connection page for more information about getting hooked
(or unhooked, as it were) up.
Off-Campus Access
ISU provides dial-in modem (56k) service for almost all of south-east
Idaho and the Twin Falls area for a nominal $20/semester charge.
They also provide high-speed DSL service to certain dormatories,
please contact computer services
for more information
Network Services
Like most colleges on the ISU campus, the Pharmacy network (often
called the "OTC network") is autonomous from the general
networking services. The Pharmacy network is primarilly run by
a dual-processor computer with over 80 gigabytes of ultra-3 high-speed
SCSI RAID disk storage with RedHat
Linux. We also have a Windows
NT 4.0 application server that handles some of our drug databases,
and various other servers running Linux and UNIX to perform specialized
tasks.
Some of the services we provide include the following:
- Nightly rotating backups of all network storage areas
- Virus filtering on the e-mail server so that virii never reach
your personal computer
- Each user has access to their own web space, and each user
can develop their own web site
- Workstation machines in our student lounge for student use,
equipped with Star Office, Microsoft Office and other productivity
tools
- Wireless networking for student laptops that work all over
campus
- Drug index resources
- Secure (SSL) webmail,
for reading your mail from anywhere in the world
- Secure (SSL) IMAP services
for your own e-mail program on your own computer (Eudora, Netscape,
etc.)
- A compact flash card reader for digital photography, and a
scanner to scan in text and images (see teaching
resources)
- CD-R/RW compact disc "burning" stations
- Network printing to various network printers
Plus many more. Please contact
the technology team if you have any questions.
