From Jonathan Goldsmith by Elizabeth G. Hitchcock. Jonathan Goldsmith became the architect of the Western Reserve area ( Painesville, Ohio area ). He built all sorts of public and private structures, some of which are still standing and highly esteemed. Among these were the Fairport Lighthouse and Academy. Geauge bank and many of the best buildings in Painesville and Cleveland. ----------------------------------------------------------------
FROM HISTORY HALL by Lake Co. Agriculture Society Jonatha Goldfield born in Old Milford, Conn. 12 Sept 1784. Settled on the present fairgrounds in 1811, then to Concord, Geauga Co.
He was the first architect, contractor and builder in what is now Lake Co. Died at his home located on the west protion of the present fairgrounds, Sept. 27,1847. Jonathan Goldsmith was a veteran of the war of 1812. he built the first lighthouse at Fairport Harbour, he constructed a portion of the Fairport, Painesville and Warren R.R. from the harbour to Painesville in 1836. This was the first railroad in the State of Ohio. He also built the First Presbyterian Church, The Painseville National Bank ( 1834 ). The Dr Stephen Mathews home, now the Painesville hospital, also Dr. John Mathews home on north State Street.
