Dr. Lai is a Professor of Pharmacology & Toxicology at Idaho State University College of Pharmacy and Visiting Scientist, Yale University Magnetic Resonance Center. He earned his B.S. (Hons.) degree in Microbiology from University College, Cardiff, Wales, M.S. degree in Neurocommunications from Birmingham University, U.K., and Ph.D. degree in Biochemistry from London University, U.K. He held a M.R.C. Fellowship at the Liver Unit, King's College Hospital Medical School, and was the second Pewterers' Fellow in Neurochemistry at the Institute of Neurology and National Hospital, both at London University, U.K. Prior to coming to Idaho State University, he was on the faculty for a year at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, and for six years in the Departments of Neurology and Biochemistry at Cornell University Medical College.

Dr. Lai is a member of the American Society for Neurochemistry, American Society for Pharmacology & Experimental Therapeutics, American Association for Higher Education, Phi Lambda Sigma, and Rho Chi. He teaches Pharmacology and Case Studies in the Pharm.D. program and Pharmacology, Toxicology, and Scientific Writing in the Graduate program. He has received four teaching awards, including the Idaho State University Distinguished Teacher Award for 1999. His research interests are in regulation of brain energy and neurotransmitter metabolism, neurotoxicology of metals, metabolism of natural antioxidants, and cell death mechanisms. He has published over 100 articles and reviews in peer-reviewed journals and handbooks. His contributions are internationally recognized, and he has been invited to speak at many international meetings. He has given many seminars on his research in Europe, South-East Asia, and the U.S. He has received three research awards, including the Idaho State University Distinguished Researcher Award in 1996. Dr. Lai was an Associate Editor of Pharmacy Case Review and Editorial Board Member of Neurotoxicology, Metabolic Brain Disease and Neurochemical Research. He has also been a reviewer for over 30 international biomedical journals since 1975. Dr. Lai has reviewed grant proposals for the Medical Research Council, National Institutes of Health, Veterans Administration Merit Review Board, and several other private non-profit foundations in Europe and in U.S.
